RMNP’s east-facing mountains—like those visible from popular spots such as Sprague Lake, Bear Lake, Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, The Loch, and Endovalley (all located on the Estes Park side of the park)—experience a breathtaking phenomenon called alpenglow. At sunrise on a clear day, the sun casts a warm, golden hue across these peaks. This creates jaw-dropping, almost ethereal lighting. It’s certainly worth trying to witness it! This time of day is perfect for dreamy couples portraits or wedding ceremonies with little to no people around.

Those same east-facing locations on the Estes Park side of RMNP offer a completely different vibe at sunset. As the sun dips behind the towering peaks, it creates a soft, backlit glow rather than direct golden light. The exact timing of this effect varies depending on the time of year, as the sun disappears behind the mountains much earlier than the official sunset time. While the glow at sunset is undeniably romantic, it’s a subtler and moodier light compared to the bold alpenglow of sunrise.

The Grand Lake Side of RMNP: A Hidden Gem

For those looking to escape the crowds altogether, check out the west side of RMNP near Grand Lake. This part of the park offers an equally stunning yet more secluded experience. One designated wedding ceremony spot here is the Harbison Meadow Picnic Area. It’s a serene location surrounded by meadow and forest views.

In the summer months (typically late May through October), you can easily drive Trail Ridge Road to connect the east and west sides of the park. This scenic drive takes about 1 hour long and is an adventure in itself. Since it’s so beautiful, you might want to give yourself 2 hours just to stop along the way and take in the beauty! In winter, when Trail Ridge Road is closed, you’ll need to drive through Winter Park, which takes about 3.5 to 4 hours.
