Horseback Wedding Adventure in Estes Park, Colorado

This couple planned a jaw-dropping horseback wedding in Estes Park! It was a blend of an intimate wedding celebration and an adventure elopement. A wedding day spent entirely on their own terms, surrounded by the rugged beauty of Colorado.

Intimate Wedding Ceremony in Estes Park

Their photography coverage began with a peaceful forest ceremony overlooking the mountains near Estes Park, Colorado. With just a few loved ones present, it felt quiet, intentional, and full of emotion. It was the kind of start that perfectly set the tone for the horseback wedding adventure to follow.

A Private Ride for Horseback Wedding Photos

You don’t have to be a horseback riding pro to share this experience on your wedding day. In fact, I’ve photographed couples who rode for the very first time. On their wedding day! How cool is that?!

On this day, we worked with Elkhorn Stables located in Estes Park, Colorado. They’re a favorite Colorado outfitters who work well with photographers like me to help make this an unforgettable experience for couples.

Here’s my best advice for planning horseback wedding photos:

  • Book a private ride. The more time you have, the more relaxed and fun it feels! Especially if you’d like to hop off at scenic viewpoints for photos.
  • Hire a photographer familiar with this type of adventure. I will either hike or ride alongside the group, depending on the terrain, so I can capture every angle of the ride.
  • Coordinate with your outfitter. Let them know of your plans and that a photographer will be joining. In my experience, they’re usually super accommodating and help match you with horses that are calm around dresses, trains, or veils and take you to the best photo spots!
  • Think about light. Early morning or golden hour rides make for stunning photos and a more comfortable temperature.
  • Choose an epic backdrop. Mountain or desert landscapes add that extra flair.
  • Dress for the occasion. Think boots you can comfortably ride in, a secure hairstyle that won’t catch in the wind, and yes, cowboy hats are 100% encouraged. They add personality and help with sun protection (plus, they photograph beautifully).

Want to go all in? Consider actually riding to your ceremony site!

Rocky Mountain National Park Wedding Photos

Ya know what’s so great about Estes Park, Colorado? It’s the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park! So most couples that get married in this area will choose to go into the national park for amazing couples photos. And that’s just what these two did! We spent the evening at Lily Lake and up on Trail Ridge Road, literally watching the sun go down before heading back to town for a family dinner celebration. Here’s what we captured.
