Why Choose Denver Botanic Gardens for Engagement Photos

Denver Botanic Gardens is the perfect location for engagement photos with loads of variety in a single spot. As a photographer, I can say this is one of the most inspiring spaces to get creative and capture unique images. No two sessions are ever the same! Between the seasons, the lighting, and each couple’s vibe, it always feels fresh.

Plus, it’s right in the heart of Denver! And you know what that means. It’s easy to pair the gardens with other nearby photo spots, post (or pre) session drinks or food. I even had a couple visit a nearby bookstore after their engagement photos at the garden where we captured even more unique photos!

Things to Know Before You Go

Photography Permit

There is a photography permit required to photograph at Denver Botanic Gardens.

  • Single-session permit: $100
  • Annual permit: $500

Pro tip: If you hire me for your engagement photos, this permit is already included in your photography package!

Time Limitations

The photography permit covers you for 2 hours in the gardens. I’ve found this to be the perfect amount of time to explore the entire space without feeling too rushed!

Events & Closures

The Gardens often host events including weddings, concerts, and seasonal festivals. Sometimes this may result in partial or full closures.

They post closure updates on their website.

You can also call ahead to ask about the availability of specific areas on a particular date

Best Time to Take Photos

For lighting purposes, I would highly recommend scheduling your session first thing upon opening, or during the last 2 hours. When possible, book a weekday engagement session to help avoid crowds.

Seasonal Considerations

As majority of the gardens are outdoors, it’s typically the most in bloom during spring, summer, and early fall. Though the gardens are open year round, and still have amazing structures and indoor spaces for winter photos!

What to Wear for Engagement Photos at the Gardens

First and foremost, wear something you feel confident and amazing in. When you feel good, it shows, and it will translate to your photos!

Here are some tips to help you choose outfits that look great and feel like you:

  • Bring layers! Lightweight jackets, shawls, or accessories like hats or scarves can add variety without needing a full outfit change.
  • Coordinate, don’t match. Instead of wearing the exact same color, choose pieces that complement each other and fall within the same color palette.
  • Stick to a color theme like all earth tones, neutrals, or jewel tones. This helps the photos feel cohesive and lets the gardens shine as your backdrop.
  • Go for movement. Flowy dresses, skirts, or relaxed fabrics catch the light and breeze in such a dreamy way, especially in open garden spaces.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. We’ll be walking around the gardens quite a bit, so make sure your shoes are up for the adventure.
  • Avoid busy patterns or loud graphics. Bold prints and big logos can pull focus from the two of you and feel distracting in photos.
  • Feel free to bring a second outfit! A wardrobe change halfway through can offer two different vibes in one session. This is perfect if you want both casual and dressy looks.

If you’re ever unsure, I’m happy to help you plan outfits that photograph beautifully and still feel true to your style.
