But in case you’re still browsing for inspiration, here’s everything you should know before planning your photos.

Easily Accessible Maternity Photo Locations

Bride and groom going out on SUP

Lake Estes

A dog-friendly location with many access points! You can even get out on the lake here with personal paddleboards, kayaks or canoes, or rent them from the marina! I think a pontoon maternity session would be super cute here! The lake is large, and there are many different photo opportunities here, including by the river that feeds into it.

Knoll Willows Open Space Estes Park

Knoll-Willows Open Space

A natural area in the heart of downtown Estes Park! There are some dirt paths to wander here, but you don’t have to go far at all for lovely mountain and forest views. This location is not dog-friendly.

Mary's Lake in Estes Park

Mary’s Lake

You can drive right up onto the shoreline here making it a great spot for fishing, picnicking, and wandering around. This location is dog-friendly.

Rocky Mountain National Park Maternity Photos

The reason why so many people are drawn to the Estes Park area is because of our beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). Here are some easily-accessible location ideas in RMNP that would make for a stunning maternity photo location.

Romantic Lily Lake dock engagement photos

Lily Lake

Just about 10 minutes outside of downtown Estes Park is Lily Lake! A stunning mountain lake with frequent moose visitors. There’s a boardwalk, dock, and nice flat loop around the lake. You can get mountain and lake views here, plus some aspen groves too!

View from Upper Beaver Meadows

Upper Beaver Meadows

Wide open meadows with mountain views! This is a lovely spot for maternity photos, located right near the entrance to RMNP. This is an especially great location during the summer time when timed entry is only required for this location between 9am-2pm.

Moraine Park location in RMNP

Moraine Park

Lovely meadow space with a stream running through the middle and excellent mountain views! This meadow is large and there are lots of stunning areas to wander. You might even get lucky and see a herd of elk!

Sprague Lake

Sprague Lake is a popular spot for fishing, spotting moose, and an excellent location for maternity photos too! There is a flat dirt path that loops the lake, and lots of areas along the trail for photos.

Bear Lake

Similar to Sprague Lake, Bear Lake has a relatively flat dirt path around the whole lake where you can get many angles of different mountains and some forest area too. Bear Lake is often very busy, so consider this location at sunrise for less people!

Endovalley

One of my favorite and lesser known locations in RMNP for photos! Picture wide open meadows, streams, aspen groves, and of course those iconic mountain views RMNP is known for.

Best Time of Year for Outdoor Maternity Photos in Estes Park

Well, the optimal time for maternity photos is typically between 30-35 weeks. Of course, babies don’t exactly plan themselves around Colorado’s seasons.

If you’re hoping to show some skin and show off that belly, the most comfortable time of year to take maternity photos in Estes Park is between late May through early October. Our warmest months are July and August. Imagine wildflower meadows and full lakes, and flowing streams. It starts cooling down again come September/October, and that’s when you can expect some fall foliage too!

As always in the mountains, temperatures can change quickly so be sure to pack layers. More on that below.

And since you can’t exactly time when you’re belly will be poppin’, up next are some indoor photo location ideas in the Estes Park area. 🙂

This is a great opportunity to rent a cabin (maybe even a cabin with a view?!) and capture cozy maternity photos in the mountains. Check out Airbnb, VRBO, and spots like McGregor Mountain Lodge, Estes Park Resort, YMCA of the Rockies, and The Landing at Estes Park.

Coffee shop engagement photos

Cozy Coffee Shop or Bookstore

With permission, these locations would make for a lovely spot! I can just picture it now – storytelling images of you walking the children’s section at a bookshop picking out baby’s first reads, sipping on some tea in the corner of a coffee shop, and walking the quaint little downtown between these moments.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado

Hotel Lobby or Restaurant Bar

With permission, these locations would also make for unique and elevated maternity photos! Post up at a hightop near the window, looking out at the mountains or in front of the fireplace. The Stanley Hotel, Ember, and Twin Owls Steakhouse would be exceptionally great locations for a session like this!

What to Wear to Your Estes Park Maternity Session

My initial answer to this question is always: wear something you feel amazing in!

But to better guide you, here are some quick ideas:

  1. Bring multiple outfit options.
You are never limited to outfit changes here. Bring along some options and together we can best match the scenery, vibe and lighting.
  2. Wear layers, always.
The weather in the mountain changes fast. Having layer options such as jackets, hats, scarves will help (no matter the time of year).
  3. Coordinate with your partner.
You certainly don’t have to wear matching outfits, but aim for a similar color palette. For example, you both wear neutrals or go for all earthy tones. Pops of color can be really nice against a natural backdrop too!
  4. Think mountain-inspired.
Denim, especially light denim, and flannels are always fitting here in Colorado!
  5. Avoid logos, text, and busy patterns.
We want the focus to be on you, your connection, and this season of life. Not what’s on your clothing.
  6. Think movement and texture.
Flowy pieces photograph really well in outdoor settings, plus they’re easy to move around in! Also consider some nice textures like linen.
  7. Dressy, casual or both?
What’s your vibe? Denim and white or cream tops are great casual options whereas a flowy maxi dress will give you a more ethereal or elevated look.
