Estes Park Engagement Photos: Ideas, Locations & Tips

Why Choose Estes Park for Your Engagement Photos?

If you’re looking for a quaint town with epic mountain views for your engagement photos, Estes Park is hard to beat.

One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions here is that you can really make the experience your own. You can keep things casual with a walk through the mountains or stroll downtown, or go all out and plan an epic adventure in the alpine. There’s really no “right” way to do it.

This post will get your wheels turning and give you the inspiration you need to plan a just right for you engagement photography session.

Let’s get into it.

Best Locations for Estes Park Engagement Photos

Downtown coffee shop engagement photos

Downtown Estes Park

Picture cute shops, alleyways, and popping into quaint little coffee shops for your session. This is a great way to kick off your photos in a natural, candid way. Then afterwards, we can head over to a natural location and capture the epic mountain scenery.

Lake Estes

A perfect spot if you want to get out on the water, ride some bikes on a bike path (how cute would tandem bikes be here?!), or just enjoy a picnic with great mountain views. Consider renting a boat or bikes at the Estes Park Marina or Estes Park Mountain Shop!

Engagement photos with dog at a mountain lake

Mary’s Lake

A local favorite spot for fishing, picnics, and simply taking in the view. This is a dog-friendly photo location on the outskirts of town where you can pull your car right up to the water and tailgate! It’s accessible year-round too.

Hermit Park

Want to be in the mountains but avoid the crowds of the national park? This is your spot. It’s dog-friendly, offers beautiful hiking trails, mountain views, and you can even reserve campsites and cabins here too!

Do You Need a Permit for Engagement Photos in Estes Park?

Most locations in and around Estes Park do not require a photo permit for engagement or couples photos, especially if it’s just the two of you and a photographer.

Certain areas (like private property, shops, or businesses) may require advance notice or permission, but as your photographer, I will help you with that!

Tips for a Stress-Free Engagement Session

If you’re like most couples, you might feel awkward in front of the camera or not have much experience with professional photos.

But don’t worry, I’ve got you.

The best way to have a stress-free and laid-back photo experience is to hire a photographer you jive with, whose style fits the vibe you’re going for, and who is an idea machine that’s never going to leave you hanging without knowing what to do.

Here are a few more fast tips on how to make your engagement photos fun and enjoyable:

  • Include activities, play, and interact with one another. We’re not just taking photos here, we’re making memories.
  • Wear clothing you feel amazing in.
  • Bring multiple outfits in case you want to switch things up.
  • Treat yourself to some pampering beforehand, maybe get your hair and makeup done so you feel you’re best.
  • Heck, pop some champagne if it makes you feel more relaxed.
  • Let go of expectations for perfection. The photos that mean the most will be the ones when you’re laughing your faces off and when you’re simply living your best life with the love of your life.
  • Trust your photographer.

What to Wear For Your Engagement Photos

First and foremost, it’s most important that you wear something you feel amazing in. When you show up confident to your photo session, that’s definitely going to shine through in the images.

Here are some other pieces of advice when it comes to what to wear.

Coordinate with your partner.
You don’t have to match perfectly, but you want your outfits to feel cohesive. Maybe you both stick with neutrals, opt for earthy tones, or lean into some jewel tones for a little pop of color.

Bring layers.
Not only for warmth as the weather changes fast in the mountains, no matter the time of year, but for styling options too!

Avoid busy patterns.
Flannels photograph great and are fitting for the landscape, but I’d avoid anything super loud and distracting. Colorado might not be the place to break out the Hawaiian shirts. 😉

Avoid logos and large text.
Just do it. (See what I did there?)

When in doubt, bring options.
There are no outfit change limits here. And if you’re unsure of what might look best, bring some options along and we can decide together based on the scene.

FAQs About Estes Park Engagement Photos

When should we book our photographer?
Most couples book engagement sessions up to 3 months in advance. If a specific date is important to you, the sooner the better! Check out more information on my engagement and couples sessions here.

Can we bring our dog?
Um, YES PLEASE! There are many dog-friendly locations in Estes Park! Some of my favorites include Lake Estes, Mary’s Lake, Lily Mountain, downtown Estes Park, and Hermit Park Open Space.

Rocky Mountain National Park is not the most dog-friendly location, but leashed dogs are allowed along the roadways and I know of some great spots where we can get mountain views and have your dog(s) along too.

What happens if it rains?
You get incredibly romantic Notebook style engagement photos! 🙂 But really, we will plan your photography session when the weather is likely to be best.

How long should our session be?
Most engagement photo sessions are 1-2 hours long with no hiking involved.

Can we do multiple locations?
Yes! I highly recommend multiple locations if you want to experience different scenery. Maybe part of your engagement session is in the meadows and forest with mountains in the background, and the other part is high up in the mountains looking down!

Are sunrise sessions worth it?
Depending on the location you choose, sunrise engagement sessions can absolutely be worthwhile! Sunrise sessions are especially helpful if you choose Rocky Mountain National Park as your location and are interested in fewer crowds (and beautiful lighting on the mountains!).

Do we need hiking experience?
Absolutely not. While Estes Park and RMNP are known for beautiful hikes, there are many easily-accessible areas with incredible views that require no hiking at all.
