Twin Lakes Elopement with Dog, Forest Hike, and a Sunset Picnic

Twin Lakes in Colorado is one of those spots that instantly makes you feel like you’re stepping into a postcard. I’ve photographed numerous weddings and elopements here, and every one feels just a little magical.

This elopement took place in mid-June when the lake was thawed, the trees were flourishing, and the mountains still had some lingering snow.

Why Choose Twin Lakes in Colorado for your Elopement

Twin Lakes is massive. You’ve got sweeping mountain views, a huge lake, and shores that almost feel sandy in some spots. The space means you can easily find your own little corner for private vows or adventurous photos without feeling crowded.

Here’s why else couples choose Twin Lakes for their wedding ceremony or photos:

  • Adventure on the water. Bring your own boat, rent a paddleboard, or hop in a canoe. Paddling out for photos or even part of your ceremony adds a playful, adventurous touch.
  • Dog friendly. This area is very dog-friendly so your bff can be a part of your day too.
  • Epic drive-up photo locations. Not up for a hike? No problem. There are plenty of spots where you can pull over and capture breathtaking mountain and lake views.
  • Sunrise or sunset. Beautiful light can be found here at any time of day (your photographer will love this).
  • Secluded spots. The lake is vast, giving you the chance to find your own private area for vows, portraits, or just quiet moments together.
  • Places to stay nearby. Airbnb and VRBO rentals overlook the lake, and charming towns like Buena Vista and Leadville are close for exploring or dining.
  • Accessible year-round. Twin Lakes is easy to get to from Denver, making it a great option for couples who want a weekend escape without feeling too remote.

Nearby Hikes and Photo Locations

I especially love this about the spot because not only can you get epic lake views in your wedding photos, but you can visit so many other nearby spots for a change of scenery too!

This couple fell in love with one of my favorite nearby trails and actually chose to exchange vows there amongst the aspen trees!

But want to know something cool? You don’t even have to hike to get alternative scenery nearby. This area also offers drive-up scenic spots including mountaintops, rivers, aspen groves, and pine forests. Seriously, this region has it all.
