How to Plan an Elopement or Micro Wedding

Coming up with an elopement plan can feel both exciting and overwhelming. But the truth is, your elopement is the ultimate chance to create a wedding day that feels as personal and authentic as your love story. Whether you’re dreaming of saying “I do” on a mountaintop, by a serene lake, or surrounded by the natural beauty that speaks to your soul, this is your day—your way. I’m here to guide you through the process of creating an elopement or micro wedding experience that’s stress-free and unforgettable. Let’s dive into how to plan a wedding day that’s as adventurous, meaningful, and perfectly you as it can be!

How to plan an elopement

Elopement Planning Advice

As a photographer who has photographed over 300 small weddings + eloped herself, I want to leave you with my most valuable pieces of advice when it comes time to plan your elopement.

1. Plan an elopement day with no regrets.
Throughout the process, you might feel pressure to do things a certain way. Whether it be from family members, social media, or the wedding industry itself. But here’s the thing—this is your story. Make it one you’re proud of. At the end of your wedding day, you should be able to look back and know you did what was best and most exciting for you.

2. Keep Pinterest and wedding blogs in perspective.
A lot of what you see online comes from weddings with high-end budgets. And that’s okay—but it’s not the only way to plan a magical day. You don’t need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to have an incredible experience, but that is the budget for a lot of what you see. Remember that when dreaming up ideas or reaching out to vendors—there’s room for creativity at every budget level.

3. Let go of the “best day ever” pressure.
Yes, your elopement should be fun and exciting, but it doesn’t have to carry the weight of being “the best day of your life.” Take the pressure off and enjoy the moments as they come. Let your day be exactly what it needs to be.

4. Time is the best gift you can give yourself.
Plan your day with plenty of time to savor each moment, relax, and leave room for spontaneity. Rushing from one thing to the next can make the day feel like a blur, and it’s already going to go by too fast. Give yourself the freedom to take in every moment.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Now, let’s dive into the details and everything you need to know to plan the elopement of your dreams!

Elopements vs. Micro Weddings vs. Big Weddings: What’s the Difference?

It’s helpful to know the difference between these options as you’re planning. An elopement typically involves just the couple and maybe a handful of witnesses. This allows for complete freedom to design a personalized, adventurous day. A micro wedding has a few more guests (usually up to 20-30, but sometimes up to 50). Micro weddings can still maintain that intimate, low-key vibe. Big weddings, of course, come with a larger guest list. They tend to follow more traditional planning routes, which might not be ideal for those seeking something less conventional.

Not sure if an elopement or micro wedding is right for you? Why not turn your wedding into a 2-day celebration and have the best of both worlds?!

Imagine saying your vows on a mountaintop or in a secluded forest with just your closest loved ones there, and then celebrating with a larger gathering the following day. This way, you can keep the intimate vibe for your ceremony, while still having the fun and excitement of a bigger reception or party afterward. The best part? You get to create a completely unique, multi-layered wedding experience that reflects your personalities and love story. Plus, the time to enjoy every bit of it.

How to Tell Your Friends and Family You’re Eloping (Without Guilt)

This can be a tricky conversation to navigate, but honesty is key. Start by sharing why you’ve chosen this path—eloping is about creating a meaningful experience that’s true to your love story. It’s a way to focus on what truly matters to you as a couple, without feeling pressured by expectations. Emphasize how much you love your family and friends and reassure them that your decision doesn’t mean you’re leaving them out. You’re still planning to celebrate together, whether through a reception, a party afterward, or even a fun photo reveal.

If you’re feeling nervous about the announcement, consider dropping hints in advance. Share some inspiration photos of what you’re envisioning or describe the adventure you’re planning, so they can better picture the experience you’re going for. If it feels right, writing a heartfelt letter explaining your choice can make the conversation feel even more personal and thoughtful.

Remember, this is your day, and your loved ones will ultimately want you to have a wedding that makes you happiest.

Ways to Include Family and Friends in Your Elopement Plan (Even If They’re Not Physically There)

  • Letters to Read: Ask your family and friends to write you letters to read at at a special time during your elopement day!
  • Dress & Suit Shopping: While you may be opting for a more intimate setting, you can still involve your family by asking for their opinions when choosing your wedding attire. Share your outfit options with them virtually or bring them along for the shopping experience if possible.
  • Elopement Send-Off Party: Host a small gathering with your loved ones before you leave for your elopement adventure. It’s a way to share the excitement and include them in your journey without the full wedding celebration.
  • After Party or Reception: After your elopement, plan a celebration with friends and family to share your joy and create more memories. Whether it’s an intimate dinner or a larger reception, this gives you the chance to share your day and still honor your loved ones.
  • A Special Photo Reveal: When you return, plan a moment to reveal your elopement photos to your family and friends. You can share stories from your day and show them the beautiful images that capture the essence of your adventure. It’s a heartfelt way to share your experience, even if they weren’t there to witness it.

By thinking creatively, you can keep the intimacy of your elopement while still honoring the importance of your loved ones in your journey. This ensures that everyone feels included and that your elopement remains a reflection of what’s most important to you as a couple.

Choosing Your Dream Location

When it comes time to plan your elopement, one of the most exciting parts is selecting a location! Choose a spot that speaks to you and your unique love story!

Oh, and don’t forget about permits! Some locations, especially in national parks or protected areas, may require permits for weddings. But don’t worry, your elopement photographer (me!) can help you with that!

Quick Questions to Inspire Your Elopement Location

  • What kind of scenery resonates with you both? Do you dream of sweeping mountain views, a peaceful lakeside, or an oceanfront sunrise?
  • What type of lodging would you like? This is a great opportunity to select a unique Airbnb, resort, or hotel that fits the vibe of your day! Will it have a hot tub? Be waterfront? Is it somewhere you can keep coming back to celebrate anniversaries to come?
  • Is there a location that has personal significance for your relationship? Maybe it’s the spot of your first date, where you got engaged, or a place that embodies your shared love for adventure.
  • What type of environment would make you feel most relaxed and in the moment? Whether it’s a secluded forest or an open meadow, choose a location that allows you to truly be present.
  • Do you want a location that offers some privacy or one that’s more accessible to guests? Even if you’re eloping, you might want to consider how easy the location is to access.
  • What’s a bucket-list destination for you? Is there somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit together? I can’t think of a better time to do it than your elopement day!
  • Are there any logistical details to consider? Check for access to accommodations, travel routes, and necessary permits. Some areas may have restrictions or regulations that could impact your ceremony.
  • Will this be a wedding and honeymoon all in one? Many couples use their elopement as an opportunity to visit a dream destination together!

Choosing the perfect location is about finding the spot that feels authentic to your love story. So, get creative, explore your options, and remember—you have the freedom to make this day truly yours.

Other Elopement Vendors

When it comes time to plan your elopement, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed about where to start. My best advice is to hire professionals who can help you! When you hire elopement vendors to help elevate your day, you get the luxury of sitting back and letting your day unfold for you. All you have to do is enjoy.

Some common elopement professionals include:

Officiants

Some couples choose to hire an officiant to help give their ceremony some structure. Whether it’s a traditional or more laid-back ceremony, an officiant will guide you through the vows and help you personalize your ceremony.

Looking to self-solemnize?

In some states—Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C.—you can legally officiate your own ceremony! Yep, no officiant or witnesses are required by law. That means it’s perfect for couples who want a truly intimate and personal experience.

And hey, if you’re dreaming of a self-solemnization-style ceremony somewhere else, I’ve got you covered! I’m ordained and can legally sign your marriage license while still keeping things as personal and meaningful as you envision.

Hair & Makeup Artist:

If you’re opting for professional hair and makeup, this is a great way to feel pampered and confident. Choose a stylist who specializes in outdoor weddings or adventure elopements as they’ll understand the need for your look to hold up throughout your adventure.

Videographer

For couples who want to capture not only photos but also videos of their elopement, a videographer is an amazing addition. It’s especially helpful if you’re eloping in a scenic location where videos can bring your day’s atmosphere to life.

Pro tip: when hiring a videographer, it’s best to find one whose style aligns with your photographer!

Florists

Even with an intimate elopement, florals can make your day feel even more magical. Consider having a florist create a beautiful bouquet, boutonniere, or any other special florals for the ceremony. You can work with local florists who specialize in wildflower bouquets or more organic looks that align with your surroundings.

Day-of Coordinator or Planner

If you want to enjoy the luxury of having someone help you plan your elopement down to the nitty gritty details, hire a pro! They can assist with securing permits, booking accommodations, and making sure everything runs smoothly from start to finish.

Private Chef or Pop Up Picnic Host

Imagine savoring a gourmet meal prepared just for you in the most beautiful place you’ve ever seen! A private chef or pop-up picnic service can bring a touch of luxury to your elopement day. They’ll handle everything—from setup to cleanup—so you can focus on enjoying each other (and the food!). This is a great way to turn your elopement into a full sensory experience.

Outfitters or Guides

If your elopement involves hiking, climbing, or exploring a remote location, consider hiring an outfitter or guide. These professionals ensure your adventure is not only safe but also seamless. They can help you navigate trails, carry gear, or even set up a cozy spot for your ceremony. Plus, their local expertise often leads to hidden gems you might not have found on your own.

Dog Concierge

A great way to include your dog(s) without worrying about the logistics! A dog concierge will be available to dog-sit, transport your dog, and even watch them overnight! This way, they can be included in certain part of your day. And when you want some alone time, you can trust their well taken care of.

Choosing Elopement Day Activities

Your elopement day is all about celebrating your love in a way that feels true to you both. There are no rules, no expectations. While traditional weddings often have a set schedule of events, eloping gives you the freedom to design your day however you like. My advice? Plan your elopement day like it’s a vacation.

  • An Outdoor Adventure: If you love the outdoors, why not start your day with a light hike to your ceremony location? Whether it’s a mountain summit or a quiet forest trail, incorporating a physical activity into your day makes it feel like an adventure.
  • Picnic or Celebration Meal: After your ceremony, treat yourselves to a special meal! Imagine a picnic on the beach or a gourmet meal at a remote cabin. You could also make it a fun experience by exploring local food spots or grabbing takeout from your favorite restaurant.
  • Activities That Reflect Your Relationship: Think about what you love doing together as a couple. Whether it’s kayaking, exploring new towns, or simply relaxing by a firepit. Incorporating activities you both enjoy will make your day feel natural and fun.
  • Relaxation Time: Elopements give you the opportunity to slow down. You get to enjoy each other’s company without the stress of a big guest list or tight schedule. Consider setting aside some downtime to just be together. To sit and savor your experience, or even do something spontaneous!

The key to your elopement day activities is to make them yours! Whether it’s a quiet moment or a thrilling adventure, your day should reflect your personalities and love for each other. This is your chance to create unforgettable memories that are as unique as your love story.

Elopement Legalities

Before you tie the knot, there are a couple of important things to check off your list:

  • Marriage License: Research the specific requirements for the state or country where you’ll be eloping. Some places require a waiting period or specific documentation, so be sure to plan ahead! If you’re traveling, make sure to account for timing and any residency requirements.
  • Permits: Whether it’s for your ceremony, photos, or activities during your elopement, certain locations (like national parks) may require permits. These often need to be secured in advance, so it’s worth checking the regulations for your chosen spot early in the process.

Being proactive with these details will save you stress and ensure everything runs smoothly when the big day arrives!
