So you’re thinking about a Lily Lake proposal in Rocky Mountain National Park?
First of all, great choice!
Overall, this is a wonderful spot for an engagement, and one you’ll be able to visit for years to come. I’ve photographed many elopements and engagements here, and am sharing my knowledge in this guide to help ensure the is the right location for your big moment. Let’s dive right in.

This is a natural spot for visitors to stop along Lily Lake. It’s closest to the parking area, so it can be a little more crowded, but if you time it right, this scene can be all yours!

Want to be above Lily Lake and looking down?! This might be your spot. The ridge trail has lovely overlooks that are perfect for a birds eye view of the the area.

Along the entire Lily Lake loop trail there are lovely shorelines, benches at overlooks, and little side trails that would make for a perfect Lily Lake proposal spot.

This is a lesser known area at Lily Lake with amazing open views of the Continental Divide!

Well, maybe I’m a little bias, but YES you should hire a photographer for your surprise engagement! And maybe if you’ve already found your way here, you’re considering it.
There are a lot of positives to hiring a photographer to go “undercover” and capture your big moment. Not only do you get the amazing documentation of it, but when you hire a local expert (like me), we will help you choose the right locations, coordinate the logistics, and help ensure it all goes smoothly. That way all you have to do is enjoy the moment.
Did I mention I’m really stealthy too? By helping you choose the right location for your big moment, I can ensure that I’ll easily blend it as just another national park goer.

After you pop the big question and your partner says “heck yes”. You two soak in those we-just-got-engaged feels. I’ll be capturing the excitement as you two soak up the joy and take in the view together. Then we typically do some engagement photos!
Lily Lake is an especially perfect spot to capture engagement photos because there are so many unique angles and mountain views within a short walk of one another! We’ll explore a little, capture the glow, and then I recommend heading out for a celebratory meal!

There is no permit needed propose or photograph a surprise proposal in Rocky Mountain National Park. But if down the road you plan on having your wedding ceremony here, there is a permit required for that. 🙂 You can learn more about Lily Lake weddings here.

It totally depends on the season and time of day! This area does see a lot of traffic, especially in the summer time and mid-day. Early mornings tend to be the least busy time (and sunrise is beautiful here!). If you want to know the best time (and locations) to have total seclusion for your Lily Lake proposal, I’d love to chat with you! And as with most locations in a national park, the further you’re willing to hike, the more secluded an area can be.
Unfortunately like most of Rocky Mountain National Park, Lily Lake is not dog-friendly. There are some nearby dog-friendly hikes though! Check out Lily Mountain and Homer Rouse.
Lily Lake is about 7 miles from downtown Estes Park, and just about a 12 minute drive (with beautiful views along the way!).
Absolutely! Lily Lake is located outside of the paid entrance station and “main” entrances of Rocky Mountain National Park. The lake starts right beside the parking area, and there’s a handicap accessible trail that loops the entire lake.
No, you don’t have to! Not all locations at Lily Lake require a hike. For example, the Lily Lake dock is a short 20 second walk from the parking lot. You can choose to loop the lake (less than a 1 mile flat walk on a dirt trail), or you can gain some elevation and hike up the ridge!
There are also some great hikes that stem from here though. For example, check out Estes Cone and Twin Sisters.
Honestly, this area is stunning year-round. It’s usually quite quiet here during the winter months, while Summer time can be busy, especially mid-morning and afternoon! If you’re visiting during “peak season” (late May through mid October), I recommend opting for a sunrise or early morning engagement to ensure the most privacy. You can also get away with evenings too during this time of year (especially around the dinner hour, before sunset).

As a local Estes Park photographer, Lily Lake is one of my favorite places to visit and photograph! It’s a lovely setting to immerse yourselves in nature, and just a short drive from downtown Estes Park.
If Lily Lake’s mountain views, quiet trails, and sparkling water sound like the perfect backdrop for your love story, let’s make it happen. Reach out and let’s plan your engagement session in Estes Park!
